“A Day Without Feminism” discusses what life was like for women during the 1970’s and before things started changing for the better, which you learn some things have in fact not changed. After reading the article the big question you are left with is “Is feminism dead?” and “Has society changed so much that the idea of a feminist movement is obsolete?”
The term for a feminist in the neutral dictionary consists of someone who believes in the social, political and economic equality of the sexes. With that being said 72 percent of people today would not consider themselves as feminists because our ideas of what it means to be a feminist vary (Washington Post) .Regardless if you are a feminist or not the rights of women have improved drastically since the waves of the feminist movements. The biggest way for a woman to have won a scholarship to further her education was generally based on looks and not the promise of their educational abilities by competing in the Miss America Pageant. Today we as women have the same opportunities, laws, and resources as men to succeed. The article mentioned women having to endure sexual orders and harassment from a boss in order to keep a job, and thankfully today we have laws about misconduct in the workplace and sexual harassment. Not to say that women do not come across these sorts of things today in the workplace, but it is less terrifying knowing that it is not legal and can be taken care of.
It is without a doubt that before entering this class and reading this article that I took the conveniences I encounter every day for granted. People today including me rarely think of feminism in our day to day activities, but without it where would we be right now .Perhaps I would be working for half the value of my work, instead of doing this assignment for college. Feminism is something I am very grateful for and all the people involved in the long and challenging process to get where we are today.
