“ The real natural look is devoid of marketing illusions in the first place.” Inscribing Gender brings up the changes that have occurred over the centuries that define what females should be doing or wearing, for example the bone crushing corsets used to give women a specified shape. Women smoking cigarettes was seen a lot more attractive in the twentieth century as opposed to now just as being pale was the thing, how did it become cool to be tan. Which is how I found my article. Before the twentieth century society viewed a golden, tanned girl as low class and having worked outside all day, but now it is seen very attractive in today’s society. We have Coco Channel to thank for this. In the early twentieth century she was photographed after returning from a sunny vacation and being the trendsetter she was, made girls want a tan like that. Just one single photo of a beautiful girl with money displaying a trait and it gives it a whole new meaning.(culture being reinforced by million dollar industries) When you think of a tanning salon and the atmosphere, tanning is generally a girl activity (which displays a gender role of the woman) although some guys do tan. Being pale is not the look media portrays as attractive and beautiful, but with new laws, taxes, alternatives, and health concerns it is not something that is rooted for, although a very high number of people still
So society brings down obese people, but allows products that kill us to be sold. I started laying in the tanning bed my Freshman year of High school because I wanted to look good and be tan for my first homecoming, but why did I think that just because I was darker I would look better? It was until this past October that I decided the health risks were not worth the short term effects of tanning. The whole “concern” about obesity is that we should be fit, active, and healthy because we will live longer but you don’t see people picking on tan girls (unless they got a spray and turned orange) or someone walking with a cig for the most part. One thing is said true for one action, but then disregarded for a more appealing action. What is the point of having a nice body if you are just going to damage with time or the parts nobody sees? Our body is our canvas and should not be judged poorly for how it looks and what it consists of; whether it is a boy with a flower tattoo or a girl with her head shaved people like what they like. Gender roles play a part in a lot of our characteristics and activities, but that does not mean we cannot like and be involved in what the opposite sex likes.
